Integrate Veeam with IDrive® e2 and Configure Object Lock
Veeam Backup & Replication with IDrive® e2 provides a simple, reliable way to store immutable backups offsite while improving protection against ransomware and accidental loss. When configured with bucket-level Object Lock, it helps ensure backup copies stay immutable for the required retention period.
Note: Simply enabling bucket versioning does not provide immutability and may lead to incorrect backup behavior.
If your requirement is standard (non-immutable) backups, then:
- Object Lock is not required.
- Versioning is optional.
Veeam and IDrive® e2 Integration Overview
IDrive® e2 supports S3-compatible Object Lock, enabling effortless integration with Veeam for secure, immutable backup storage.
With optimum object lock configuration:
- Backup data is written to the IDrive® e2 buckets.
- Veeam assigns a retention period to each object during the upload.
- Objects remain protected against deletion or modification until the retention period expires.
How Immutability Works in Veeam
Veeam applies immutability based on its internal block generation logic:
- Both full and incremental backups are aligned to a consistent retention period.
- Each object uploaded to storage receives its own immutability timestamp.
- Retention is managed automatically by Veeam during job execution.
Important Guidelines and Limitations
- Veeam works with Object Lock in Compliance Mode only.
- Retention is controlled at the object level by Veeam.
- Do not rely on versioning alone for immutability.
- Avoid enabling default retention settings at the bucket level.
- NAS or File Backups are not supported with Object Lock on v10 and v11. Veeam version 12 introduces immutability support for NAS and File Backups.
Configuring IDrive® e2 for Veeam Immutability
- Create a Bucket with Object Lock Enabled.
- Default retention is not configured.
Note: Do not enable Object Immutability with an expiry date under the Object Lock in Bucket Settings tab - Enable immutability while configuring your S3-Compatible Backup Repository.
- Select the option Make recent backups immutable for and configure the number of days for which the backups will remain immutable.
- Set the number of days for which your backups remain immutable. For more information, refer to Veeam's Block Generation.
- Continue with the standard Veeam guide based on your backup type and the Veeam version in use.
