Integrate Dell PowerProtect Data Domain with IDrive® e2

Dell PowerProtect Data Domain's Cloud Tier supports IDrive® e2 hot Cloud Storage for standard and standard-infrequent-access storage classes. Learn more about Dell PowerProtect Data Domain.

Prerequisites:

Before uploading files using Dell PowerProtect Data Domain, you require:

  1. An active IDrive® e2 account. Sign up here if you do not have one.
  2. A bucket in IDrive® e2. See how to create a bucket.
  3. Valid Access Key ID and Secret Access Key. Learn how to create an access key.
  4. A valid Dell PowerProtect Data Domain account.

Configure Dell PowerProtect Data Domain with IDrive® e2

Enable Cloud Tier

Cloud Tier storage is mandatory for the Data Domain System to support cloud units. However, before enabling Cloud Tier, you must disable File System from DD System Manager.

To enable Cloud Tier,

  1. Login to the Dell Data System Manager.
  2. Click Data Management from the left navigation pane.
    1. Select File System.
    2. Click Summary tab.
    3. Click Disable.
  3. Click Hardware from the left navigation pane.
    1. Select Storage.
    2. Click Cloud Tier to expand, and click Configure.
    3. Add storage by selecting the check box and selecting Addable Storage in the configuration popup.
    4. Click Add to Tier and click NEXT to add storage.
  4. Now, click Data Management from the left navigation pane.
    1. Select File System.
    2. Click Enable Cloud Tier in the Summary screen.
Add Cloud Unit
  1. Click Data Management from the left navigation pane.
    1. Select File System.
    2. Go to Cloud Units.
    3. Click Add.
  2. Enter your e2 S3 details in the Add Cloud Unit popup.
    1. Enter a name for Cloud Unit.
    2. Select Flexible Cloud Tier Provider Framework for S3 under Cloud Provider.
    3. Enter your IDrive® e2 bucket name as Bucket.
    4. Enter your IDrive® e2 Access Key ID as the Access Key.
    5. Enter your IDrive® e2 Secret Access Key as the Secret Key.
    6. Enter your S3 region as a Storage Region (e.g., New York).
    7. Enter your S3 end-point as Endpoint.
    8. Select Standard under Storage Class.
    9. Click Verify to run cloud verification before adding the cloud unit.
  3. Click Add after successful verification.

Note: Port 443 (HTTPS) must be open for bi-directional traffic towards the configured IDrive® e2 endpoint URLs.

Add Data Movement

Based on the specified Data Movement policy, a file or data is moved from the active tier to the cloud tier. The policy is set on a per-MTree basis. A data movement can be triggered automatically per schedule, or initiated manually.

To add a Data Movement Policy,

  1. Select Data Management from the left navigation pane.
  2. Click on MTree and select an MTree from the top panel; where you want to add a data movement policy.
  3. Select Summary and click Add under Data Movement Policy.
  4. In the Edit Data Movement Policy screen select the recently added cloud unit as Destination.
  5. Click Save.

If you select Age Range you can select a range of ages. For File Age in Days, set the file age threshold (Older than) and, optionally, the age range (Younger than).

Note: The minimum file age threshold is 14.

Automatic Data Movement

You can configure a schedule to trigger data movement automatically from Active Tier to Cloud Tier.

  1. Select Data Management from the left navigation pane.
  2. Click File Systems and select Settings.
  3. Select Data Movement tab.
    1. Set Throttle.
    2. Set Schedule.
  4. Click Save.
Manual Data Movement

You can start or stop data movement manually for any MTree that has a Data Movement Policy.

  1. Select Data Management from the left navigation pane.
  2. Click File Systems and select Summary.
  3. Click Start under Active Tier.

Note: Click Stop to stop data movement.
