What is IDrive Vault Local Backup app?

IDrive Vault offers a secure local storage for all the data on your computers. It backs up large amounts of data in real-time to the IDrive Vault appliance. You can also customize your backup set and schedule your backups to the IDrive Vault appliance for automated data protection. On installation, IDrive Vault Local Backup initially backs up all your data, and then performs incremental backups since the last backup, which means subsequent backups will only include files / folders that have been added since the last backup.

 

What is IDrive Vault appliance?

IDrive Vault appliance is a storage device to which you can store data locally from all your computers and then, backup data you wish, from the appliance to IDrive cloud. The IDrive Vault device comes with storage of 4 TB, and you can integrate it into your new or existing network for faster backups and restores.

 

How do I perform backup operation using IDrive Vault local app?

  1. Download and install IDrive Vault Local Backup application on your computer.
  2. Enter username and password provided by the Admin.
  3. Click 'Login'. Select the 'Remember me' check box, if you want the app to remember your credentials.

IDrive Vault local app backs up all files / folders, except the OS drive, to the IDrive Vault appliance in real time.

 

Is my data safe with IDrive Vault Cloud?

Yes. IDrive Vault Cloud ensures that data is encrypted at source via the 256-bit AES encryption, with an optional private key. The encryption keeps data safe during transit and storage, and the RAID protected, world class data centers of IDrive keep your data securely archived.

 

How does IDrive Vault works? / How do IDrive Vault backs up data?

IDrive Vault local app backup your data locally across the Local Area Network (LAN) to the IDrive Vault appliance. From there it is securely backed up to IDrive cloud via IDrive Vault Cloud backup app.

 

How can I exclude files / folders from being backed up ?

There are multiple ways by which you can exclude files / folders from being backed up.

To exclude folders,

Based on full path names:

  1. Right-click the IDrive Vault icon from the system tray, and select Preferences.
  2. The Backup Preference screen appears.
  3. Right-click anywhere on the 'Exclude folders with full path name' box, and select 'Insert folders'.
  4. Browse and select a folder, and click OK.
    Login

Note: To delete a file from the exclude list, click the close icon.

Based on partial name:

  1. Right-click the IDrive Vault icon from the system tray, and select Preferences.
  2. The Backup Preference screen appears.
  3. Right-click anywhere on the 'Exclude files / folders with pattern name' box, and select 'Insert file / folder pattern'.
  4. Enter the file / folder name you want to exclude from backup and click OK.
    Login

Note: To delete a file from the exclude list, click the close icon.

You can also include folders for backup based on folder path names.

To include folders,

  1. Right-click the IDrive Vault icon from the system tray, and select Preferences. The Preferences screen appears.
  2. Right-click anywhere inside the 'Include Folders' box, and select 'Insert folder'.
  3. Browse and select any folder, and click OK.
  4. To delete a file from the include list, click the close icon.

Note: You cannot include folders from Mac.

 

How do I Backup Data to IDrive Vault with Time Machine?

You can also backup all your data to the IDrive Vault appliance using Time Machine, which backs up your entire drive, including system files, applications, music, photos, movies, and documents.

To set a Time Machine Backup:

  1. Login to your IDrive Vault Local Backup account.
  2. Click on the 'Time Machine Backup' tab, and click 'Configure Now'.
  3. Enter the AFP share name, and click Configure.

Note: You will have to mount your Time Machine data to back it up to your IDrive Vault appliance.

 

How do I restore the backed up files / folders from the IDrive Vault appliance?

You can restore the backed up files / folders from the IDrive Vault appliance to your local machine.

To restore files / folders,

  1. Right-click the IDrive Vault tray icon and select click 'Restore'. The Select Files / Folders to restore screen appears.
  2. Select the file(s) / folder(s) to restore and choose the desired 'Restore location'.
  3. Click 'Restore Now'.

Note: You can also restore any previous snapshots of a file / folder by clicking the Snapshots drop down arrow.

 

How do I view my Backup / Restore activities via the IDrive Vault local application?

IDrive Vault allows you to view all the backup / restore activities in your account.

To view logs,

  1. Right-click the IDrive Vault tray icon from the system tray, and select 'View Logs'. The Activity Log screen appears.

Note: To delete logs, select the specific log and click the close icon.

 

Can I view the status of my backups?

Yes, you can view the status of your backups using the IDrive Vault 'View Status' option that is active in your system tray once you install IDrive Vault Local Backup app.

 

How do I change the location of my restore jobs?

To change the location of your restore jobs,

  1. Log in to IDrive Vault app and right-click the IDrive Vault Tray icon.
  2. Click 'Restore'. The Select files / folders for restore screen appears.
  3. Click 'Browse' and choose the location where you want to restore the files / folders.
  4. Click 'OK'.

 

What are snapshots?

Snapshots are the historical view of backed up data on your IDrive Vault appliance that helps you to restore any older file or folder, and easily recover from crypto like viruses. You can roll back to any previous snapshots of files / folders to a specific date.

 

Can I backup modified files and folders after taking the initial backup?

IDrive Vault Local Backup app automatically recognizes the modified parts of files / folders and backs them up in real-time.

 

Can I pause the backup operations?

You can pause your ongoing backup operations. Right-click the IDrive Vault tray icon, and select Pause.

To resume the backup, right-click the IDrive Vault tray icon, and select Resume.

 

Can I use IDriveVault to upload my Outlook data files or Quickbooks files?

Currently, IDriveVault does not support Outlook or QuickBooks file uploads, as these files are continuously being accessed.
